A little something different this week. Because this past week marked the birthday of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, from whom the Cthulhu Mythos sprung forth, as well as the annual NecronomiCon festival in Providence, Rhode Island, I’m featuring a track from the most Lovecraftian of all metal bands (in my opinion, of course), the enigmatic PORTAL. (Also, your more Chaotic Satanists have tended to gravitate to the mythology of Lovecraft’s oeuvre, seeing parallels between their Fallen Dark Lord and those Old Ones, either resting in deathlike sleep or banished to the outer realms.) Their brand of experimental, blackened death metal comes closest to representing the non-Euclidian geometry described in Lovecraft’s fiction, sounding as if the the very vibrations that make up their sonic output should not exist in congress. They are disturbing and off-putting. You come away from them feeling that perhaps the music is bizarre, but that if you listened to them long enough that it may begin to make perfect sense; that you’d be able to perfectly comprehend everything that is going on within the black-shrouded murk of din that issues forth from your speakers. But you also fear that by that point you will have become a gibbering madman, capable of only clawing at the walls that contain you and warning of the coming of the Old Ones. There’s only one way to find out.
Happy Sunday, kids.
