Been a few weeks since I’ve reached into the pits to deliver a bit of evil. This one’s from Behemoth, the Polish blackened death metal outfit. They started out playing typical Norway-inspired black metal, but over the years have transitioned to a more technical death metal sound with black metal influences carried over from the early days. Lead singer/guitarist Nergal (Adam Darski) recently recovered from a bout with leukemia, thanks to a bone marrow transplant. He has also appeared numerous times in court in Poland for a 2007 incident in which he ripped up a copy of the bible onstage, charged with insulting religious sentiment. His upcoming trial, set for later this year (after a district court this month overruled an earlier judgment stating that he was exercising his artistic freedom in the 2007 performance) is seen to be a major ruling on the extent of freedom of speech in his home country.
