Been kind of slow lately, been writing new stuff for ATLRetro.com and compiling my year-end best-ofs, so here’s a little personal crap.
Okay, here’s a thing that surprises a whole lot of people.
Even though I’m a rabidly left-wing metalhead, horror movie maniac, proselytizer of everything weird and outré, and a guy who regularly posts odes to That Guy Downstairs every Sunday…
I FREAKIN’ LOVE CHRISTMAS.
This ain’t no ironic stance I’m taking here, people.
I love it all. The decorating, the music, the holiday specials, the exchange of gifts, the rituals of getting together with family and friends and eating a huge Christmas dinner…it’s all delightful. Right now I’ve got at least 9 Christmas music compilations loaded up on my iPod, and I plan to add a whole helluva lot more before this season’s over.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love Halloween. I mean, I spent an entire month blogging about the damned holiday, so I think you’ve already gotten the picture on how much I’m into that. It’s my favorite holiday of all time. But Christmas, man…The whole thing is just so full of emphasis on happiness, communal spirit, helping folks out, having fun, etc. that it’s hard for me to be in a bad mood for long when I’m knee-deep in it.
CHRISTMAS IS THE ANDREW W.K. OF HOLIDAYS.
And I’ve been in enough situations where I could have come out the other side just hating Christmas. Even this year, when Christmas should be the kind of thing that gets me incredibly depressed (personal reasons which I won’t bore you with), it still gets me going to drag out the tree (yeah, Charlie Brown, it’s fake. Get over it.), the ornaments and the stockings, put on the tunes, and get the house ready for the season.
So yeah. Call the end-of-year winter celebration whatever you want. I just call it Christmas because that’s the name I grew up with and it’s a habit of shorthand (and most of the songs say “Christmas,” so it’s easier that way). Celebrate the Solstice, Saturnalia, Bodhi Day, Yule, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Yalda, Pancha Ganapati, Mōdraniht or the festival of Malkh. It doesn’t matter. This world is a big pit, with everyone pushing back and forth and going around in circles. Take the time to pick someone up when they fall.
